Recent Trends in Beam Size Measurements using the Spatial Coherence of Visible Synchrotron Radiation

چکیده
The optical method of measuring the transverse beam profile and size using visible synchrotron radiation (SR) began with simple imaging systems. The resolution was limited by both diffraction and wavefront errors making it difficult to resolve beam sizes less than 50 m. Instead of imaging, an interferometric method for measuring the beam profile and size using spatial coherence was introduced. The method is based on Van Cittert-Zernike’s theorem, and can resolve 4-5 m beam sizes with an error of only 0.5 m. In this presentation, the principle of the measurement, the SR interferometer design, and some resent measurement results are reviewed. The incoherent field depth effect for the horizontal beam size measurement is also described with some recent results. Design study calculations for the SR interferometer at the LHC will be presented.

The Linear Collider presents new challenges for beam instrumentation. Some of the beam dimensions are of the order of a few nm (at the i.p.), and to be able to reach these small sizes, the beams have to be tightly controlled and understood from their very inception onward. A number of different techniques are available in the arsenal of beam size and beam emittance measurements (e.g. transition...
متن کاملSpatial Coherency of the Synchrotron Radiation at the Visible Light Region and Its Application for the Electron Beam Profile Measurement
A spatial coherenceies of SR beam at visible light region were measured both σ and π-polarized components at Photon Factory. A wave-front division type polarized interferometer was designed and constructed for this experiment. Interferograms were observed clearly in the vertical direction. π phase difference of the interference fringe was observed between interferograms corresponding to σ and π...
متن کامل“Crystal Collimator” Measurement of CESR particle-beam Source Size
We have measured electron and positron beam source size at CHESS when the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) is run dedicated for the production of synchrotron radiation. Horizontal source size at several beamlines is expected to shrink by a factor of two but synchrotron (visible) light measurements only provide the vertical size. Therefore a “crystal collimator” using two Bragg reflection in...
متن کاملMeasurement of Beam Size at the Photon Factory with the Sr Interferometer
The beam size at the low emittance configuration of the Photon Factory was measured by the use of the SR interferometer. The spatial coherence of the visible SR beam was measured for both of the vertical and horizontal directions with the wavelengths at 500nm and 633nm. From the measured spatial coherence of the SR beam, the beam size measurements of 87.3μm in the vertical and 261.2 μm in the h...
متن کاملCharacterization of spatial coherence of synchrotron radiation with non-redundant arrays of apertures.
A method to characterize the spatial coherence of soft X-ray radiation from a single diffraction pattern is presented. The technique is based on scattering from non-redundant arrays (NRAs) of slits and records the degree of spatial coherence at several relative separations from 1 to 15 µm, simultaneously. Using NRAs the spatial coherence of the X-ray beam at the XUV X-ray beamline P04 of the PE...
